چکیده

The responses of rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) of ostrich (struthio camelus) chicks during road transportation were investigated using standard recording procedures. The RT and RR of the ostriches increased significantly (P<0.05) from 39.5 ± 0.1 0C and 12.2 ± 2.0 breaths per minute (bpm), respectively, before transportation, to 40.2 ± 0.3 0C and 50.7 ± 9.1 bpm, respectively, following transportation. The pre-transportation HR value of 61.4 ± 1.0 beats per minute did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from the value of 68.5 ± 2.2 beats per minute recorded during the journey. The RT, RR and HR values recorded six hours after the journey were not significantly (P>0.05) different from the corresponding pre-transportation values of the ostriches. The results showed that transportation of ostrich chicks for four hours induced a transient increase in RT and RR values. It is concluded that road transportation of ostrich chicks for four hours apparently has no adverse effects on health and performance of ostrich chicks.

Behavioural responses, traumatic injuries and live weight losses in ostrich (Struthio camelus) chicks transported by road during hot-dry conditions

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of six-hour road transportation on behavioural activities, live weight and traumatic injuries of 40 (20 males and 20 females) ostrich chicks age 3.5 months. The average weight of the birds was 27.7 kg. Four separate journeys were conducted and each vehicle was loaded with 10 ostriches. The behavioural events, environmental data, live weights and ...

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF RESPIRATORY MICROBIOTA OF A YOUNG OSTRICH (Struthio camelus) USING TRACHEO BRONCHO ALVEOLAR LAVAGE

Respiratory diseases caused by bacteria are common to all of ages of ostrich (Struthio camelus). Young chicks, however are more susceptible, and are considered a major hindrance in successful ostrich farming. Using culture dependent techniques, a diminutive prospect of bacterial pathogens and corresponding diseases associated with respiratory system has been described. Here we report the first ...

Bacterial enteritis in ostrich (Struthio Camelus) chicks in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Ostrich (Struthio camelus) chicks less than 3 mo age are observed to experience a high mortality rate that is often associated with enteritis. This study was undertaken to investigate the infectious bacteria implicated in ostrich chick enteritis. Postmortems were performed on 122 ostrich chicks aged from 1 d to 3 mo and intestinal samples were subjected to bacterial culture. Bacterial isolates ...

Modulatory effect of ascorbic acid on physiological responses of transported ostrich chicks.

The aims of this study were to determine the modulating role of ascorbic acid (AA) on rectal temperature (RT), heterophil to lymphocyte (H to L) ratio and aberrant behaviours of ostrich chicks transported by road for 4 h during hot-dry conditions. Twenty ostrich chicks aged 2.5 months, of both sexes and belonging to the Red Neck breed, served as subjects of the study. The chicks were assign...
